La Vela Mission: Building a Spanish-speaking Christian community of faith-seekers who are committed to the practice of spiritual exercises, study and worship in order to strengthen our witness of Christ's mercy through outreach and service to others.
La Vela Mission is an outgrowth of and a collaborating partner with...
La Vela Center, a non-profit agency which provides spiritual care and emotional support to the Latino immigrant community and builds bridges of mutual understanding between the Latino and non-Latino cultures. For more information, contact Peer Support Coordinator Luis Pena Gomez at 336-327-6511.
The symbol of La Vela, which means "the candle" in Spanish, came from artist, author and board member of La Vela Center, Todd Drake. Todd first conceived of the candle as a potent symbol of light in times of increasing hostility, lack of trust and the politicization of the lives of millions of Latino immigrants. See The Candle Project.
La Vela also uses the candle as a symbol of hope. In our logo, a candle is laid over a door, a door of welcome and invitation to deeper community with Latinos and non-Latinos who seek justice and hope for all, either through La Vela Mission or La Vela Center. La Vela Mission offers weekly worship (Sundays at 1 PM at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection at 6720 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410), First Communion, Bible Study, weekly meditation, and youth/children's activities. Except for youth ministries, all adult activities are conducted in Spanish and are open to anyone who speaks Spanish or who would like to learn.

La Vela Latino Center for Spiritual Care was formed in 2008 by concerned English- and Spanish-speaking members of the Greensboro Community. Its goal is to follow Christ's command to care for others, especially the "least of these." Through spiritual care, faith-based mental health support and community-building, La Vela Center bridges the growing gap that threatens to close doors of mutual opportunity and darken the light of neighborly love.
La Vela Lutheran Church grew out of La Vela Center as a new separate mission in 2009. It is a mission church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) with worship services in Spanish (with English translation) every Sunday at 1 PM in the church building called "Resurrection" at 6720 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410.
